Exercise and obstructive sleep apnoea: a 24-week follow-up study

Abstract: ObjectiveReport on long-term follow-up results in the apnoea hypopnea index (AHI) and self-reported daytime sleepiness in participants with moderate to severe obstructive sleep apnoea at 12 weeks after completion of a high-intensity exercise training or control intervention.MethodsTwenty-six participants with obstructive sleep apnoea (body mass index (BMI) 37 (36–39) kg/m, age 52 (49–55) years, apnoea-hypopnoea index 40.5 (31.3–50.2) events/hour), randomised to either 12 weeks of supervised high-intensity inte… Show more

“…Nevertheless, it appears that the heightened EE observed in OSA is largely offset by various other OSA-induced EB alterations [ 30 ]. First, sleep deprivation associated with OSA results in physical inactivity, and a negative association between OSA severity and physical activity level exists [ 33 ]. Second, ghrelin, which has orexigenic action (i.e., stimulates food intake), is abnormally elevated in OSA, and the satiety signalling function of leptin is abrogated in OSA, consistently with a hormonal profile predisposing to high EI [ 34 ].…”

“…As part of their cardio-respiratory rehabilitation, patients are advised to lose weight, decrease alcohol intake and avoid dorsal decubitus during sleep. However, data regarding long-term PAP adherence and results in OSA are scarce and divergent, varying largely depending on the population and program characteristics [ 5 , 6 , 7 , 8 , 9 ].…”
