Accepted: 7 November 2017The paper presents an attempt to analyze comparative machinability of two different varieties of nitinol alloy type, or compare the susceptibility of these materials to change the volume, shape and dimension of adopted machining conditions. The machinability of the material can not be fully determined numerically by only one independent factor. Therefore multivariate analysis technique of weighted diagram radar was developed by authors. This technique allowed for the comprehensive identification machinability analyzed varieties of nitinol alloy exclusively on the basis of the specified in literature directional material properties and general recommendations tool manufacturers on the cutting conditions. In the paper the full usefulness of this technique to demonstrate the differences in machinability of different varieties of the same species alloy, without the need for lengthy and cost-intensive experimental trials was presented.

Abstract. The paper presents the stages in the development of a computer system for quality tool selection (with DSS characteristics) for the purpose of process improvement in production companies. The basic premise adopted in the development of the system was to acquire and save (store) in a system the knowledge of practitioners from this area in order to use the knowledge repeatedly, e.g. during staff training. A gap in knowledge was noticed in this respect. According to practitioners, the purpose of using quality tools given in the literature should be more precise in terms of the time in the production process when a given tool may be used, and the type of problem that may be solved with the tool. Specific information on these issues was gathered through a survey conducted among managers. All actions taken within this research study illustrate the key processes of knowledge management proposed in [1].

Accepted: 1 December 2016The paper contains a review of methodologies of a process of knowledge discovery from data and methods of data exploration (Data Mining), which are the most frequently used in mechanical engineering. The methodologies contain various scenarios of data exploring, while DM methods are used in their scope. The paper shows premises for use of DM methods in industry, as well as their advantages and disadvantages. Development of methodologies of knowledge discovery from data is also presented, along with a classification of the most widespread Data Mining methods, divided by type of realized tasks. The paper is summarized by presentation of selected Data Mining applications in mechanical engineering.
