Examining Identity Consolidation Processes Among Ethnic Minority Gay Men and Lesbians

Abstract: Past scholarship has demonstrated shortcomings in developmental theories for both sexual and ethnic identity. Furthermore, identity development may be especially challenging for members of multiple minority groups facing significant social stressors. The primary goal of this study was to explore identity consolidation processes among individuals with intersecting minority identities. Using in-depth, personal interviews and self-report measures, data were collected from 16 ethnic minority gay men and lesbians. … Show more

“…Any degree of having sex with same-sex partners appears to result in marginalization from ethnic minority communities (Gallor & Fassinger, 2010;Goode-Cross & Good, 2009). Results of this study, and others, support the general conclusion that ethnic and sexual minority individuals experience multiple forms of oppression from various sources (Díaz et al, 2001;Kennedy & Dalla, 2014;Meyer, 2010).…”

“…Despite the significant experiences of biphobia reported by participants, there may be reason to hope that acceptance and understanding of bisexuality is on the rise (Ripley, Anderson, McCormack, Adams, & Pitts, 2011). Greater acceptance of sexual minority identity among ethnic minority communities has been correlated with older age, level of education, involvement in ethnic and gay communities, and engagement in activism and/or politics (Kennedy & Dalla, 2014). Fewer public misperceptions about bisexual identity may lead to an improved social milieu for bisexual men.…”

“…On the commercial gay scene in London other inequalities, such as disability, poor body image and mental health difficulties, may further compound alienation (Wood 2004). There is a need for further research and theorising around the intersections of ethnicity and sexuality both in the context of HIV and more broadly (Kennedy and Dalla 2014), especially in the context of xenophobic media and political representations around migrant groups seeking healthcare in the UK, which is particularly powerful in the context of ethnic minorities and HIV treatment (Dodds 2006).…”

“…Gay Men of Color face dual identity development, in that they may develop their nonprivileged racial identity throughout their early lives and then later become aware of their (also nonprivileged) sexual orientation (e.g., Huang et al, 2009; Kennedy & Dalla, 2014; Sarno et al, 2015). Psychological research has highlighted the potential for Gay Men of Color to experience a sense of conflict in allegiances between their gay identity and their ethnic or racial identity (e.g., Sarno et al, 2015).…”
