“…The current study uses cross-sectional data, so the present findings can only be considered correlative at best. When measuring social learning theory, we were only able to measure two of the four components that are necessary according to Akers (1998), but the measures are consistent with similar research on criminal behavior, including substance use (Pratt et al, 2010; Schaefer et al, 2015). The current study examined violent crime and property crime as involvement of various crimes for each type as opposed to individually, which Jackson and researchers (2019) also did.…”

“…One measure was created that comes from two different questions that asked 12th-grade students, “I get a real kick out of doing things that are a little dangerous; I like to test myself every now and then by doing something a little risky (both questions ranged from 0 = disagree to 4 = agree).” These two questions were added together to create a scale for the measure known as risk preference (α = .81). This measure follows the Grasmick and researchers’ (1993) scale of risk-taking and is also identical to prior studies capturing risk preference using the MTF data (Schaefer et al, 2015; Vito et al, 2015, 2019).…”

“…This identifies the transmission of behaviors between closely associated adolescents as the primary mechanism for influence, suggesting that a child's closest friends have the strongest influence on the child's behavior (Dishion, McCord, and Poulin 1999;Forsyth et al 2014;Forsyth et al 2015;Forsyth et al 2013;Payne and Cornwell 2007;Rocheleau and Chavez 2015;Schaefer et al 2015aSchaefer et al , 2015b.…”

“…Drug abuse is caused by a combination of environmental, biological and psychological factors (Shoemaker, 2010). There are various factors that cause young people to abuse drugs and even become addicted (Schaefer, Vito, Marcum, Higgins, & Ricketts, 2015); (Muigai, 2012). These include family networks, interactions and home environments.…”
