Evolution of “Tribal” Social Networks: Theory and Prehistoric North American Evidence

Abstract: This paper addresses two topics central to the study of nonhierarchical, regional social networks, sometimes termed “tribal” social networks: (1) alternative models of the evolution of regional integration; and (2) the archaeological determination of characteristics of such regional networks. Problems in previous ethnological and archaeological studies are identified, and an alternative model is proposed. This is based on a more general theory of organizational processes in nonhierarchical social systems. Data… Show more

“…No solo se hace alusión al embellecimiento de la misma con fines estéticos, sino que es vista como una forma de expresión que se relaciona con la participación activa de los artefactos en la vida cotidiana. En este sentido, un estilo cerámico implica que quienes lo realizan comparten ciertos códi-gos y signos visuales, tanto de significación como de creencias; a la vez que dan sentido de pertenencia y contribuyen a dar identidad a un grupo (Braun y Plog, 1982;Gosselain, 1999;Janusek, 2005).…”

“…Archaeological data and analogies from extant populations are used to discuss a model of Late Woodland population dynamics. The Late Woodland data are also compared to previous studies of Middle Woodland skeletal variation (Buikstra, 1976(Buikstra, ,1977 and are used to support a model of Middle to Late Woodland demographic change developed by Braun (1977) and Braun and Plog (1982) from ceramic data.…”

“…It has come to be seen as central to individual fitness [35][36][37], although it still lacks a formal analytical framework [37][38][39][40]. We suggest that progress can be made in this direction using social network neo-theory [41], because consistency in dyadic patterns of behaviour, along with any changes in consistency, can be captured, in abstract terms, by the topological features characteristic of interaction networks [35,42].…”
