Evidence of Some Natural Products with Antigenotoxic Effects. Part 1: Fruits and Polysaccharides

Abstract: Cancer is one of the leading causes of deaths worldwide. The agents capable of causing damage to genetic material are known as genotoxins and, according to their mode of action, are classified into mutagens, carcinogens or teratogens. Genotoxins are involved in the pathogenesis of several chronic degenerative diseases including hepatic, neurodegenerative and cardiovascular disorders, diabetes, arthritis, cancer, chronic inflammation and ageing. In recent decades, researchers have found novel bioactive phytocom… Show more

“…Combinations of various phytochemicals derived from dietary sources or medicinal plants not only may reduce the risks of specific cancers, but also have been shown to suppress cancer cell proliferation [ 13 ]. Urethane-induced epithelial carcinogenesis results in histological and molecular changes that resemble human lung cancer and allows for mechanistic evaluations of therapeutic interventions during tumor development [ 14 ].…”

“…The plant products (such as phenolics, organic acids, flavonoids, and glucosinolates), being used as immunomodulator in the indigenous system, have been reported to modulate the immune system in various in vivo models (Izquierdo-Vega et al. 2017 ). The SCPLE improved humoral immunity as shown in the indirect haemagglutination test, also the cell-mediated immunity and carbon clearance significantly increased but there was a reduction in CP-induced neutropenia (Nagarathna et al.…”

“…Flavonoids are well-known antimutagens that have been detected by Ames assays [31, 32], and there are several reports that use MNU as a mutagen [33]. Although genistein has been reported to inhibit MNU-induced mutagenicity, we also tested for its antimutagenicity towards MNU to compare with those of the other isolated flavonoids [34].…”
