Evidence of human infection by a new mammarenavirus endemic to Southeastern Asia

Abstract: Southeastern Asia is a recognised hotspot for emerging infectious diseases, many of which have an animal origin. Mammarenavirus infections contribute significantly to the human disease burden in both Africa and the Americas, but little data exists for Asia. To date only two mammarenaviruses, the widely spread lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus and the recently described Wēnzhōu virus have been identified in this region, but the zoonotic impact in Asia remains unknown. Here we report the presence of a novel mam… Show more

“…Blasdell et al . (,b) identified a variant of Wenzhou virus (Cardamones virus) and a related virus named Loei River virus, in two of the localities analysed in the present study. Loei River virus was found associated with B. indica, B. savilei , and N. fulvescens , and Cardamones virus with R. norvegicu s and R. exulans (Table ).…”

“…The virus was hypothesized to be spreading more widely among humans in Asia. 13 The microorganism Anaplasma capra was first isolated from goats in China. The corresponding human infections were then identified in northern China, where the risk of exposure to novel tick-borne pathogens is higher.…”
