“…Interestingly, only two genes encoding lipoxygenase (SI Appendix, Table S7.10) have been identified, a surprising result given the diversity of oxylipins observed in this alga. The presence of methyl jasmonate, a plant hormone involved in stress signaling, has been detected in vitro after incubation with linolenic acid (37,38). However, no candidates for allene oxide synthase, allene oxide cyclase, or jasmonic acid carboxyl methyltransferase were found.…”

“…Other than that, all reports of cyclopentenones reported from seaweeds originate from red, not brown algae -e.g., methyl jasmonate in Chondrus crispus (Bouarab et al 2004), PGA 2 , PGE 2 , PGF 2 and 15-keto-prostaglandins in Gracilaria verrucosa (Sajiki 1997, Imbs et al 2001, Dang et al 2010 and PGE 2 in Gracilaria tenuistipitata (Hsu et al 2008) and G. rhodocaudata (Sajiki 1997). In none of these cases, a function could be associated with these compounds yet, even though in several cases prostaglandin production was found to be upregulated by some form of stress (e.g., Sajiki 1997, Imbs et al 2001, Bouarab et al 2004, Gaquerel et al 2007, Hsu et al 2008. Interestingly, prostaglandin content (or production, respectively) has been associated with occasional cases of toxicity of seaweeds to humans (Higa and Kuniyoshi 2000).…”

“…Pathogen attacks are known to induce the de-novo formation of oxylipins, which are generated by oxygenation of PUFA. Oxylipins form part of the defense mechanism against negative effects of endophytic pathogens in C. crispus [50][51][52]. This aspect might further contribute to the here observed differences in the fatty composition between C. crispus and M. stellatus.…”
