Distribution of Polychlorinated Biphenyls and Chlorinated Pesticide Residues in Trout in the Sierra Nevada

“…Each organochlorine compound was confirmed by operating at a relatively slow GC column temperature program with an initial temperature held at 200°C for 5 min to eliminate solvent peaks, then programmed to 280°C at 2°C min −1 on both DB‐5 (described above) and DB‐1701 (22 m × 0.25‐mm i.d., 0.25‐μm film thickness; J&W Scientific). A GC–MS confirmation of these compounds also was performed, as reported in Datta et al (1999)…”

Persistent organic pollutants and mercury in the Himalaya

“…Indeed, toxaphene levels in fish were found to increase with altitude (Donald et al, 1998). Several studies in European mountain regions (Weiss et al, 1998(Weiss et al, , 2000Carrera et al, 2001Carrera et al, , 2002Grimalt et al, 2001;Vilanova et al, 2001a,b,c) and in the American Sierra Nevada (Datta et al, 1999) suggest that this is a ubiquitous phenomenon. When measuring along an altitudinal profile in the Austrian Alps, Weiss et al (1998) found that the site at the highest altitude showed higher concentrations of nearly all the analyzed substances in spruce needles and in the humus layer compared to the sites at lower altitude.…”
