Abstract: Implicit in much of the fatherhood discourse is the assumption that if fathers want to take an active role in their children's lives, they could and would do so. While research has highlighted the factors associated with fathers' involvement, very few, if any, of these studies have been guided by a theory that accounts for both fathers' involvement intentions and their ability to follow through on those intentions. The theory of planned behavior and its emphasis on attitudes, the beliefs of significant others,… Show more

“…Thus, recent research in the world aims to examine the factors causing such an increase in Cesarean rate and to find a proper way to reduce it through appropriate educational interventions (1). Since several studies have shown that the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) is effective in examining and determining the risk factors affecting the occurrence or the absence of a specific behavior (10)(11)(12), in our study, the theory has been used as a framework for research. Based on the psychological theory, this model is originated from the theory of rational action and the most important predictor of an individual's behavior is his/her behavioral tendency.…”

“…Changes in legislation in the more gender egalitarian direction, although necessary, are not sufficient for making the shift toward beliefs and practices of leave take-up that are more gender equal. Beliefs about the division of leave are essential given that beliefs predict behaviour (Ajzen, 1991), a theoretical hypothesis also empirically evidenced for fathers' involvement in their children's lives (Perry & Langley, 2013). Therefore, we can conclude that what is also needed in our society is the deconstruction of traditional gender-role beliefs in general, especially in the case of men.…”

“…theory of planned behaviour, Ajzen, 1991) and empirical data show that beliefs predict behaviour (e.g. Ben, Golube & Shamrai, 2010;French & Cooke, 2012;Perry & Langley, 2013), exploring beliefs about parental leave in more detail could also help us understand parents' actual leave taking decisions.…”
