Abstract: AIM: This study aimed to assess the quality of water and sediment of urban streams (Lajeado, Preto, Pedras and Lewis-Pedroso) located in Santa Cruz do Sul County, RS, Brazil, using the microcrustacean Ceriodaphnia dubia as test-organism. METHODS: Quarterly scientific excursions to the streams were held on August and November 2011, February and May of 2012 in order to collect water and sediment samples, in the upper reaches (P1, P3, P5, P7) and lower reaches (P2, P4, P6, P8), totalizing 8 points. To evaluate th… Show more

“…High values for phosphate, biochemical oxygen demand after 5 days, and thermotolerant coliforms were found, and the phosphate levels were responsible for the classification of these streams at the poorest water quality level [ 31 , 32 ]. Another study, evaluating acute and sublethal effects of water and sediment samples on Ceriodaphnia dubia, showed strong water quality degradation caused by industrial and domestic discharges [ 33 ].…”

“…These effluents are often laden with pollutants (Lohner et al 2001), many of which are not readily biodegradable and tend to persist in the environment (Wepener et al 2001;Yadav et al 2009). This drastically alters the natural balance in environmental water quality, thereby raising a plethora of public health and ecotoxicological concerns (Yadav et al 2005;Gabriel et al 2006;Schwarzenbach et al 2010;de Vargas et al 2014). Wastewater effluents, in particular, can harbour a potentially wide array of contaminants ranging from genotoxicants and cytotoxicants (Wirzinger et al 2007;Žegura et al 2009), heavy metals and metalloids (Lohner et al 2001;Ahmad et al 2013), nutrients (Carey and Migliaccio 2009), pesticides (Cahill et al 2011;Köck-Schulmeyer et al 2013), pathogens (Dungeni et al 2010;Odjadjare et al 2010), hydrocarbons, organic matter and endocrine disruptors (e.g.…”
