Evaluation of Thermal Diffusion Models for Ternary Hydrocarbon Mixtures

Abstract: An accurate thermodi¤usion model is of paramount importance to the petroleum industry for the prediction of the compositional variation in hydrocarbon reservoirs. As the most recent theoretical development, Kempers and Firoozabadi models can be used for both binary and multicomponent mixtures. In this paper, we verified these models with three ternary hydrocarbon mixtures. The results reveal that the accuracy of the thermal di¤usion coe‰-cients relies on the accuracy of the thermodynamic properties from equati… Show more

“…However Shu et al [22] using PCSAFT equation of state managed to resolve this discrepancy and recently obtained an excellent agreement with the experimental data available in the literature. For our calculation using CPA equation of state our results are close to Shu et al [22] results for our conditions.…”

“…This has prompted theoretical [9][10][11][12][13][14][15][16] as well as experimental investigations [17][18][19][20] on thermodiffusion in hydrocarbon mixtures. While a theoretical formulation exists for multi-component mixtures [21], due to the complexity of the problem, experiments are often undertaken on binary [18,22,23] and ternary [24][25][26] hydrocarbon mixtures.…”

“…The Firoozabadi model [3] for the multi-component mixtures is well established in the literature and has been validated with respect to the Fontainebleau benchmark values [6] of the binary mixtures of nC 12 , IBB, and THN [7], as well as ternary hydrocarbon mixtures [8,9]. The expression for the thermodiffusion coefficients is obtained from two fundamental expressions of the flux of individual components (J i ) in a mixture, viz.,…”
