Evaluation of Sentinel Lymph Node Dose Distribution in 3D Conformal Radiotherapy Techniques in 67 pN0 Breast Cancer Patients

Abstract: Introduction. The anatomic position of the sentinel lymph node is variable. The purpose of the following study was to assess the dose distribution delivered to the surgically marked sentinel lymph node site by 3D conformal radio therapy technique. Material and Method. We retrospectively analysed 70 radiotherapy (RT) treatment plans of consecutive primary breast cancer patients with a successful, disease-free, sentinel lymph node resection. Results. In our case series the SN clip volume received a mean dose of … Show more

“…In this study 95% had involvement of only one SLN and approximately 90% of patients underwent BCT, including breast irradiation [4]. Importantly, although tangential-field WBI does not assure reliable dose coverage of levels I and II of the axilla, therapeutic irradiation dose is delivered to at least part of this volume in a significant percentage of patients [28][29][30].…”

“…scars) for radiotherapy treatment planning are becoming less reliable. Therefore, the use of surgical clips has been discussed in the last decade ( 6 , 7 , 8 , 9 ). Though practical, the use of clips has not been established routinely in some centers, as such proof for the dosimetric advantage is still pending.…”
