Evaluation of saliva glutathione, glutathione peroxidase, and malondialdehyde levels in head-neck radiotherapy patients

Abstract: Background/aim: It is believed that radiotherapy has important effects on oxidant/antioxidant systems. Oxidative stress occurs when the balance between oxidant formation and antioxidant defense is disrupted in favour of oxidants. The aim of this study was to determine the biochemical changes in saliva pre-and post-radiotherapy in head-neck radiotherapy patients and to find out the effects of radiation on glutathione (GSH), glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), and Malondialdehyde (MDA) levels in saliva. Materials a… Show more

“…GST was also found to be expressed in mammalian saliva, including human saliva [52]. Glutathione is found at a concentration of approximately 1 g/L in human saliva [53], enabling the GSH saturation of GSTP, the main human salivary GST, and then allowing it to catalyze glutathione conjugation at the maximal rate. Additionally, this salivary expression was shown to be modulated in humans in association with food behavior.…”

“…In addition to enzymatic systems, there are non-enzymatic systems such as GSH, melatonin, vitamin A, vitamin E, and ascorbic acid. GSH plays a vital role in this system by neutralizing harmful compounds and reducing oxidative stress (Derindağ et al, 2021).…”

“…Another parameter for consideration when developing a chemical analysis device is the target analyte. As mentioned above, portable colorimetry devices can detect various chemical or biomolecules in solutions, which can be used as biomarkers, such as the presence of albumin in urine indicating kidney disease, a reduced citrate level in urine suggesting prostate cancer, the level of cardiac Troponin I (cTnI) in blood helping the diagnosis of acute myocardial infarction, or the absence of glutathione in saliva indicating the potential of head-neck cancer [ 5 , 18 , 19 , 20 , 21 ]. The detection target will influence the design choices, such as the sensitivity of the detecting sensor, the background light intensity, and the recognising reagent type.…”
