Seasonally dry evergreen forests in southeast Pará, Brazil are transitional between taller closed forests of the interior Amazon Basin and woodland savannas (cerrados) of Brazil's south-central plains. We describe abiotic and biotic gradients in this region near the frontier town of Redenção where forest structure and composition grade subtly across barely undulating topography. Annual precipitation averaged 1859 mm between 1995-2001, with nearly zero rainfall during the dry season months of June -August. Annual vertical migrations of deep-soil water caused by seasonal rainfall underlie edaphic and floristic differences between high-and low-ground terrain. Low-ground soils are hydromorphic, shaped by perching water tables during the wet season, pale gray, brown, or white in color, with coarse texture, low moisture retention during the dry season, and relatively high macro-nutrient status in the surface horizons. Forest canopies on low ground are highly irregular, especially along seasonal streams, while overstory community composition differs demonstrably from that on high ground. High-ground soils are dystrophic, well-drained through the wet season, brown or red-yellow in color, with finer texture, higher moisture retention, and low macro-nutrient status in the surface horizons compared to low-ground soils. Forest canopies are, on average, taller, more regular, and more closed on high ground. Lowground areas can be envisioned as energy and nutrient sinks, where, because of hydrologic cycles, canopy disturbance likely occurs more frequently than at high-ground positions if not necessarily at larger scales.

RESUMOAs três parcelas permanentes usadas neste estudo são testemunhas (não perturbadas) de um experimento de manejo florestal do Instituto Nacional de Pesquisas da Amazônia, no município de Manaus (AM). Essas parcelas têm sido monitoradas desde 1980, mas para efeito deste estudo, foram consideradas 12 medições repetidas no período 1986-2000. Durante este período, o fenômeno El Niño (seca anormal na região) ocorreu em duas ocasiões, em 1992-93 e 1997-98, sendo que o último foi seguido do La Niña (chuva anormal na região), em 1999. Devido a esses fenômenos, as taxas de recrutamento e mortalidade foram iguais, 0,7%, durante o período observado. No entanto, a acumulação (fixação na árvore) de carbono, foi de 16 toneladas métricas, dando um incremento periódico anual significativo (p = 0,039), em torno de 1,2 t/ha/ano. These plots have been monitored since 1980, although for this study the period from 1986-2000 was considered. During this period, the El Niño phenomenon, which causes increased drought in the region, occurred on two occasions (1992-93 and 1997-98), followed by La Niña which causes increased precipitation in the region (1999)(2000). Despite of this change in climate, recruitment and mortality rates were equal throughout the period at 0.7% yr-1. During the same period, carbon accumulation in forest biomass was 16 Mg, resulting in a statistically significant (p = 0.039) increase of about 1.2 Mg biomass ha-1 yr-1.

-(Regression models to estimate aboveground phytomass of the Floresta Baixa de Restinga). The purpose of this study was to develop equations to estimate the aboveground phytomass of the Floresta Baixa de Restinga. We selected 102 trees of 29 species occurring in the study area and 102 trees of Syagrus romanzoffiana (Cham.) Glassman, distributed proportionately among the diameter classes of trees. The trees were cut at ground level and the total height and diameter at breast height (DBH) of each tree were measured. Leaves and woody material were separated in order to determine their fresh weights under field conditions. Samples of each fraction were oven dried at 70 °C to constant weight to determine their dry weight. The models were developed by using single linear regression analysis, where the dependent variable was the dry mass (DW), and the independent variables were height (h), diameter (d), the product of diameter and height (d 2 h) and the product of diameter, height and woody density (r d 2 h). The models developed indicate that the diameter explains much of the variability of the trees phytomass and the tree height is the explanatory variable of the specific equation for Syagrus romanzoffiana. The best equations to estimate aboveground phytomass were: ln DW = -1. Em condições ideais, um ecossistema maduro atinge seu potencial máximo de armazenamento de material e os valores de biomassa podem ser usados como um ponto de referência.A matéria orgânica acumulada pela vegetação, a fitomassa, pode ser determinada através do corte e medida da massa das plantas de uma área amostral relativamente pequena, cujo valor médio encontrado é extrapolado para uma área maior. Ecossistemas florestais raramente têm sua fitomassa medida por métodos destrutivos devido às dificuldades inerentes a este tipo de estudo, como o elevado custo e as restrições legais referentes ao corte da vegetação. A fitomassa de florestas, em geral, é estimada de maneira indireta, através da aplicação de modelos preditores desenvolvidos a partir das relações alométricas encontradas nos componentes da vegetação. Porém, são necessários modelos específicos para os diferentes ecossistemas para que o erro das estimativas seja minimizado (Rochow 1974, McWillian et al. 1993.Os modelos preditores são elaborados a partir de análise de regressão, onde se estudam as relações entre a massa seca das árvores e seus dados facilmente mensuráveis, como altura e diâmetro.
