Evaluation of Regional CO2 Mole Fractions in the ECMWF CAMS Real‐Time Atmospheric Analysis and NOAA CarbonTracker Near‐Real‐Time Reanalysis With Airborne Observations From ACT‐America Field Campaigns

Abstract: This study systematically examines the regional uncertainties and biases in carbon dioxide (CO2) mole fractions from two of the state‐of‐the‐art global CO2 analysis products, namely, the Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) real‐time atmospheric analysis from the European Centre for Medium‐Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) and the CarbonTracker Near‐Real‐Time (CT‐NRT) reanalysis from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), by evaluation against hundreds of hours of airborne in situ… Show more

“…This implies that the source of the error is either in the upstream boundary conditions, or in regional fluxes far enough upstream to have a Mid‐Atlantic LFT signal. North American uptake signals that progressively increase west‐to‐east have been noted previously (Chen et al., 2019; Lan et al., 2017; Sweeney et al., 2015).…”

“…Model evaluation should focus on both the GHG flux and atmospheric transport properties of the model. This modeling work is underway within the ACT project (e.g., Chen, Zhang, Lauvaux, et al, ; Chen, Zhang, Zhang, et al, ; Feng, Lauvaux, Davis, et al, ; Feng, Lauvaux, Keller, et al, ; Schuh et al, ).…”

“…CarbonTracker data are used here for the same purposes as CAMS. Additional information on these models and their comparisons with ACT‐America data products are reported in Chen et al (). The CarbonTracker 2017 product (CT2017) is used for 2016 dates, and the near‐real‐time (NRT) product is used for 2017 and 2018.…”
