Sugarcane productivity is stagnating in India. Demand for sugarcane is increasing. Scope for extending sugarcane area in the country is limited. Under these circumstances, emphasis must be on increasing sugarcane productivity. Technologies such as situation-specific cultivars, newer planting techniques, heat therapy or meristem culture derived quality seed material, site-specific and cultivar-specific nutrient management, drip irrigation, fertigation, integrated weed management, abiotic and biotic stress management, etc. have the potential to increase yields substantially. This paper reviews some of the recent developments in these areas and suggests how these technologies can be applied at field level to enhance productivity.

La sequía afecta negativamente al desarrollo y rendimiento de cultivos; el grado de afectación depende de su intensidad, del genotipo y de la interacción entre estos. En México, 62% de la caña de azúcar (Saccharum spp.) se cultiva bajo temporal. Para conocer algunos de los efectos de la sequía en este cultivo, se estableció un experimento en campo en Tlaquiltenango, Morelos, México en 2011. Se probaron diez variedades, en los tratamientos de sequía: con riego (S0) durante la Gran Sequía Invernal (GSI) que cubrió de finales de octubre de 2011 a mediados de mayo de 2012; sin riego de marzo a mediados de mayo de 2012 (S1); y sin riego de finales de noviembre de 2011 al final de la GSI (S2). Se cuantificó: número de brotes y cepas vivas; altura de planta; longitud, número y diámetro de tallos molederos; así como el número y longitud de entrenudos en estos. La sequía redujo el número de cepas y brotes vivos en 29 y 21%, respectivamente, debido al ataque de Diatraea sp., que se hizo más severo a medida que la sequía se intensificó. La recuperación de las plantas fue diferencial entre tratamientos, ya que la altura de la planta se redujo 15 y 26% para S1 y S2 respecto a S0, respectivamente. La longitud del tallo moledero se redujo en promedio para S1 y S2, 34%, asociado a reducciones en número y longitud de entrenudos. El número y diámetro de tallos molederos también se redujeron en sequía.

Seven sugarcane (Saccharum sp.) commercial cultivars, viz., , originally derived from meristem cuttings were subjected to simulated osmotic stress (as 200 mM mannitol) under controlled environmental conditions. Proline content in the leaf tissues of all cultivars except K92-80, increased in plants subjected to mannitol-induced osmotic stress. Chlorophyll a (Chl a ), chlorophyll b (Chl b ), total chlorophyll (TC), maximum quantum yield of PSII (F v /F m ), and photon yield of PSII (Φ PSII ) of all seven cultivars decreased under osmotic stress resulting in a reduction in net-photosynthetic rate (P n ). A positive correlation was found between F v / F m and Φ PSII , proline content and non-photochemical quenching (NPQ), Φ PSII and P n , and P n and plant dry weight in the sugarcane cultivars. Based upon Ward's multivariate cluster analyses of data for proline content, photosynthetic capacity, chlorophyll fluorescence, and growth inhibition, three cultivars (K88-92, K92-80 and UT-94-2-483) were identified as water deficit sensitive, whereas four (K84-200, K95-84, K97-32 and LK92-11) as water deficit tolerant. These observations on different cultivar's sensitivity/tolerance were confirmed by growth and yield attributes measured in a field trial. The plant dry weight (in vitro) correlated positively with total stalk weight of sugarcane cultivars
