Evaluation of Productive Performance in Two Plumage-Color Types of Japanese Quail Using Microsatellite Markers.

Abstract: Two plumage-color types of Japanese quail were used to compare the meat production potentialities using five selective microsatellite markers. A total number of birds was 189 for the two plumage-colors of quail [(Brown 114; 49 males, and 65 females), and (Golden 75; 42 males, and 33 females)], were used. Phenotypic data were live body weight at day1 (BW0) and measured weekly till the end of six' weeks of age (BW6). The weight gain was calculated for intervals. The analysis of variance for live body weight at d… Show more

“…Quail is considered one of the economic birds due to its low weight and its consumption of fewer feed quantities, as it is suitable for intensive breeding due to its small size as well as short period of generation (3-4) per year and early puberty and its low costs. It is considered a valuable resource for meat and eggs, in addition to its resistance to the harsh environment and resistance to diseases that what made it a suitable animal for experiments in research centers and stations (Jatoi et al, 2013) and (Rabie, 2019).…”

“…Quail is the smallest breed of domesticated bird that is growing in importance for the poultry industry, and they are valuable birds for research and are also used as experimental animals as well as in many selection experiments because of its low breeding costs as it requires small spaces and is related to its small body size (80-300 g). In addition, to its short generation period (3-4) generations per year, early puberty, resistance to disease, and high egg production make it an excellent laboratory bird (Vali, 2008., Jatoi et al, 2013and Rabie, 2019. The quail bird has been widely used in many genetic, physiological, biomedical and behavioural studies (Huss et al, 2008) The domestication and breeding of quail have led to many breeds with different plumage colours and patterns (Tavaniello, 2014).…”
