Evaluation of Long-term Anatomic Changes Following Canaloplasty With Anterior Segment Spectral-domain Optical Coherence Tomography and Ultrasound Biomicroscopy

Abstract: Persisting anatomic changes of SC, a transscleral filtration and a scleral lake can be recorded by AS-OCT and UBM long-term after successful canaloplasty.

“…The resolution offered by today's OCT imaging devices has allowed clinicians to identify aqueous humour outflow structures, including the SC, as already described by many authors in healthy adults or those with glaucoma (Kagemann et al 2010; Usui et al 2011;Shi et al 2012;Chen et al 2013;Hong et al 2013Hong et al , 2014Skaat et al 2016Skaat et al , 2017Rosman et al 2017;Kuerten et al 2018).…”

“…Currently, OCT is gaining popularity to assess the anterior chamber angle, and it is now possible to identify the various structures that make up the angle (Wong et al 2009;Bald et al 2012;Fern andez-Vigo et al 2015), specifically, the SC can be swiftly and accurately examined, as described by many authors (Kagemann et al 2010;Usui et al 2011;Shi et al 2012;Hong et al 2013). Interest in the study of the SC has recently mounted in an effort to understand the pathophysiology of aqueous humour drainage (Huang et al 2017) in glaucoma, or its behaviour in response to numerous treatments such as travoprost (Chen et al 2013), pilocarpine (Skaat et al 2016), cyclopentolate , trabeculoplasty , canaloplasty (Grieshaber et al 2017;Kuerten et al 2018), or trabeculectomy (Hong et al 2014). The study of angle structures such as the SC and TM is also attracting the attention of ophthalmologists in relation to the emerging field of minimally invasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS).…”

“…Knowledge about the degree of suture tensioning may be helpful in assessing the success of canaloplasty. Also, the amount of SC distention can be assessed post-operatively using anterior imaging techniques, such as high-resolution ultrasound biomicroscopy [4,40,[79][80][81][82] and anterior segment optical coherence tomography [77,81,83].…”

“…All these anatomy concepts have found a great correspondence in the OCT imaging, so that the aspect of the conjunctiva in the OCT image presents typical features as shown in several reports [5][6][7][8][9][10]. The use of ASOCT on the normal conjunctiva is a complete and useful tool since the OCT imaging already provides a detailed representation of healthy limbus, sclera and conjunctiva.…”
