Evaluation of hydrocarbon generation and migration in the Molasse fold and thrust belt(Central Eastern Alps, Austria) using structural and thermal basin models

Abstract: The Molasse Basin represents the northern foreland basin of the Alps. After decades of exploration, it is considered to be mature in terms of hydrocarbon exploration. However, geological evolution and hydrocarbon potential of its imbricated southernmost part (Molasse fold and thrust belt) are still poorly understood. In this study, structural and petroleum systems models are integrated to explore the hydrocarbon potential of the Perwang imbricates in the western part of the Austrian Molasse Basin. The structura… Show more

“…In the Sierning imbricates in the east (Fig. 1c), a detachment is present within the Rupelian (Hinsch, 2013;Gusterhuber et al, 2013;2014). However, the minimum amount of total shortening in the Chattian and Aquitanian (including overthrusting by Alpine nappes) is about 32 km (Hinsch, 2013).…”

“…Based on 2D numeric models, Gusterhuber et al (2013Gusterhuber et al ( , 2014 reconstructed hydrocarbon generation and migration along cross-sections in the western and eastern part of the Austrian sector of the North Alpine Foreland Basin. The evolution of the basin in the eastern part is shown in Fig.…”

“…Hydrocarbon generation started in Miocene times, when the Alpine nappes started to overthrust the southern NAFB and ended about 5 Ma ago due to uplift and cooling (Gusterhuber et al, 2013(Gusterhuber et al, , 2014. The oil window is reached at a depth of about 4 to 6 km below sea level.…”

“…They experienced a complex charging history, involving minor early primary microbial gas and late thermogenic oil (Gusterhuber et al, 2013(Gusterhuber et al, , 2014. In addition, in-situ oil alteration occurs within the reservoir sandstones in shallow horizons (above -650 m; Gratzer et al, 2011).…”

“…This study focusses on the thermogenic system. This petroleum system is based on Lower Oligocene source rocks which became thermally mature as a result of burial beneath the Alpine nappes in the Miocene (Gusterhuber et al, 2013, 2014. In the western part of the study area, the Lower Oligocene source rocks are incorporated in the molasse imbricates (Sachsenhofer et al, 2010).…”
