Inadequate wastewater management can cause negative impacts on the ecosystem, becoming an obstacle to aquaculture growth. New technologies have been developed to reduce the nutrient load in aquaculture wastewater involving microalgae as phytoremediation agents. In addition to reducing the nutrient load of water bodies, the microalgae‐based phytoremediation can also generate high‐added value biomass. Arthrospira (Spirulina) is a little‐explored genus as a phytoremediation agent for aquaculture wastewater, representing about 30% of the biomass produced in the world that is known for its high concentration of proteins, carotenoids and phycocyanin. Using the aquaculture wastewater is an important strategy to reduce the production costs, obtain high‐added value biomolecules and mitigate the effects of wastewater on the aquatic ecosystem. However, there are few reports of Arthrospira sp. as a remediation agent for aquaculture wastewater that assesses the biochemical composition. This manuscript aimed to review the cellular mechanisms of phytoremediation and the biochemical composition of Arthrospira currently described when grown in aquaculture wastewater.

The excessive consumption of petroleum resources leads to global warming, fast depletion of petroleum reserves, as well as price instability of gasoline. Thus, there is a strong need for alternative renewable fuels to replace petroleum-derived fuels. The striking features of an alternative fuel include the low carbon footprints, renewability and affordability at manageable prices. Biodiesel, made from waste oils, animal fats, vegetal oils, is a totally renewable and non-toxic liquid fuel which has gained significant attraction in the world. Due to technological advancements in catalytic chemistry, biodiesel can be produced from a variety of feedstock employing a variety of catalysts and recovery technologies. Recently, several ground-breaking advancements have been made in nano-catalyst technology which showed the symmetrical correlation with cost competitive biodiesel production. Nanocatalysts have unique properties such as their selective reactivity, high activation energy and controlled rate of reaction, easy recovery and recyclability. Here, we present an overview of various feedstock used for biodiesel production, their composition and characteristics. The major focus of this review is to appraise the characterization of nanocatalysts, their effect on biodiesel production and methodologies of biodiesel production.

In this study, it was possible to reach the production of cellular biomass and fatty acids, being 57.1% palmitic acid (C16:0) and, 26.3% stearic acid (C18:1), adding 83.4% of the total fatty acids produced by the strain which are equal or superior to other microalgae already researched for this purpose.…”

Due the worldwide need to improve care for the environment and people, there is a great demand for the development of new renewable, sustainable, and less polluting technologies for food, health, and environmental industries. The marine environment is one of the main areas investigated in the search for alternatives to the raw materials currently used. Thereby, cyanobacteria and marine microalgae are microorganisms that are capable of producing a diverse range of metabolites useful for their cellular maintenance, but that also represent a great biotechnological potential. Due its great potential, they have an enormous appeal in the scientific research where, the biological activity of metabolites produced by these microorganisms, such as the antioxidant action of sterols are, some examples of biotechnological applications investigated around the world. Thereby, Brazil due to its extensive biodiversity, has high potential as a raw material supplier of marine waters, researching cyanobacteria and microalgae metabolites and their applications. Thus, this rapid review intends to present some important contributions and advances from Brazilian researchers, using the biomass of Brazilian cyanobacteria and marine microalgae, in order to illustrate the value of what has already been discovered and the enormous potential of what remains unexplored so far.
