The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of different light sources, thermocycling and silane on the bond strength of metallic brackets to ceramic. Cylinders of feldspathic ceramic were etched with 10% hydrofluoric acid for 60 s. Half of the cylinders (Groups 1 to 4) received two layers of silane. Metallic brackets were bonded to the cylinders using Transbond XT and divided into 8 groups (n=20), according to light source (Radii Plus LED - 40 s; Groups 1, 2, 5 and 6 and XL 2500 halogen light - 40 s; Groups 3, 4, 7 and 8) and experimental conditions with (Groups 2, 4, 6 and 8) without thermocycling (Groups 1, 3, 5 and 7). Shear bond testing was carried out after 24 h of deionized water storage (Groups 1, 3, 5 and 7) and thermocycling (Groups 2, 4, 6 and 8; 7,000 cycles - 5°/55 °C). Date were submitted to three-way ANOVA and Tukey's post hoc test (α=0.05). The Adhesive Remnamt Index (ARI) was evaluated at 8× magnification. The application of silane was effective in increasing the shear bond strength of the brackets to ceramic (p<0.05). Significant difference (p<0.05) on the bond strength was observed between light sources with or without thermocycling. The ARI showed a predominance of scores 0 for all groups, with an increase in scores 1, 2 and 3 for the silane groups. In conclusion, silane improved significantly the shear bond strength of the brackets to ceramic. The thermocycling and light sources influence on the bond strength.

Objective: To evaluate the effects of three different curing units on the physical and mechanical features of three different orthodontic adhesive resin materials. Material and Methods: 45 specimens (5 mm in diameter, and 2 mm in thickness) of each of the three different adhesive composite resin materials (Transbond XT, Grēngloo™ Adhesive and Light Bond Paste) were cured with three different light units (a polywave third generation (Valo), a monowave (DemiUltra), and a second-generation LED (Optima 10)). To quantify degree of conversion (DC), the Attenuated Total Reflectance Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy was used in transmission mode (ALPHA FT-IR Spectrometer, Bruker Optics, Germany). Vickers hardness value was recorded under constant load 100 g for 10 s with a microhardness tester (HMV M-1, Shimadzu Corp., Kyoto, Japan). The data were statistically analyzed using Kruskal-Wallis and chi-square tests. The level of significance was considered p < 0.05. Results: The highest DC values were obtained as a result of curing with Optima 10. This rate was followed by Demi Ultra and Valo, respectively. Transbond XT samples showed a lower level of conversion than the samples of Light Bond Paste and Grēngloo™ Adhesive. The top surfaces of each material showed higher hardness values than the bottom surfaces ( p < 0.05). The Light Bond Paste showed the highest hardness values both on the top and bottom surfaces among the three materials, followed by Grēngloo™ Adhesive. While the hardness values of the top surfaces of the samples cured with Demi Ultra and Valo light units were similar, higher hardness values are recorded with Valo on the bottom surfaces (Valo; 85.200/75.200 (top/bottom) versus Demi Ultra; 86.100/66.000 (top/bottom)). Conclusions: The different DC and the surface hardness properties were recorded for the resin as orthodontic adhesives depending on different light units. Shorter radiation time caused lower DC and surface hardness values.

Inadequate shear bond strengths of self-etch, self-adhesive systems for secure orthodontic bonding

This study evaluated the shear bond strength (SBS) of a traditional orthodontic bracket bonding agent (Transbond XT) against two self-etch, self-adhesive systems (Maxcem Elite and Vertise Flow). Sixty premolar teeth and sixty brackets were randomly and equally divided into five groups: Transbond XT (TXT) as the control, Maxcem Elite (ME) without etching, ME with etching (ME/ Etch), Vertise Flow (VF) without etching, and VF with etching (VF/Etch). Respective SBS results of the five groups were 9.86±3.20, 4.67±2.94, 7.82±2.56, 2.55±0.77, and 7.89±1.17 MPa. SBS values of the new self-etch adhesive systems were significantly lower than the traditional etch-and-rinse control (p<0.005). However, no significant differences were found between TXT and the self-adhesives applied with etching (p>0.005). After debonding, ARI scores "0" and "1" were predominant in non-etched ME and VF groups. It was concluded that new self-etch, self-adhesive bonding systems require additional phosphoric acid application to achieve comparable SBS values as the traditional orthodontic bonding agent.
