Abstract: Background and Study AimsTo obtain an adequate view of the whole small intestine during capsule endoscopy (CE) a clear liquid diet and overnight fasting is recommended. However, intestinal content can hamper vision in spite of these measures. Our aim was to evaluate tolerance and degree of intestinal cleanliness during CE following three types of bowel preparation.

“…Findings were not correlated with use and type of preparation. No attempt was made to correlate VCE findings with pre-procedure preparation since the effect of preparation on diagnostic yield remains controversial [10][11][12] . All patients undergoing antegrade DBE were NPO for eight hours prior to the exam.…”

“…Correlation of VCE findings with pre-procedure preparation was not assessed since the effect of preparation on diagnostic yield remains controversial [10][11][12] . Despite these limitations, we believe this data is significant and reflects the actual clinical practice of referring patients to specialized centers for deep enteroscopy based on the findings of community read VCE studies.…”

“…This was based on the known criteria (percentage of obscured mucosa) used in previous studies [11][12][13]17,18 and their subjective opinion of whether the bowel preparation in each video enabled an accurate medical interpretation of the procedure. An inadequate (IA) image within the video was defined as an image in which ≥50% of the mucosal surface was obscured by content or bubbles.…”

“…Some studies have found that the use of purgatives may result in higher-quality images and DY, [7][8][9][10] whereas other studies did not confirm these observations. [11][12][13][14] More recent meta-analysis and consensus guidelines suggest that active bowel preparation with purgatives may enhance diagnostic yield. 15,16 Currently, there is a lack of validated scores to report quality bowel preparation and studies have mostly used a variety of subjective qualitative grading scores.…”

“…Al inicio de la utilización de la cápsula la única preparación intestinal consistía en ayuno de 12 h o bien dieta líquida las 24 h previas 13,14 . Actualmente los estudios apoyan la realización de una preparación intestinal con solución evacuante, aunque todavía no está claro qué tipo de preparación es la mejor opción 15---17 .…”
