Evaluation of depressive symptoms in patients with coronary artery disease using the Montgomery Åsberg Depression Rating Scale

Abstract: The aim of this study was to evaluate, in patients with coronary artery disease (CAD), factor structure and psychometric properties of the Montgomery Åsberg Depression Rating Scale (MADRS) to identify patients with current major depressive episode (MDE). The construct validity of the MADRS against self-rating scales was also evaluated. Consecutive 522 CAD patients at admission to the cardiac rehabilitation program were interviewed for the severity of depressive symptoms using the MADRS and for current MDE usin… Show more

“…Depression was evaluated by the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI),43 as this questionnaire proved to be effective for depression screening 44 45. The BDI consists of 21 groups of four alternative self-evaluation statements used to assess the presence and severity of the affective, cognitive, motivational, psychomotor and vegetative components of depression, with higher scores indicating more severe depression.…”

“…The MADRS is a valid measure (Müller et al 2003), highly correlated with the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale ( r = .94), the Research Diagnostic Criteria for depression ( r = .70), and the Inventory of Depressive Symptomology- Clinician Rated ( r = .81). The MADRS is also a reliable measure, with high inter-rater reliability (κ = .89–.97) and internal consistency (α = .82) (Bunevicius et al 2012; Cusin et al 2010; Montgomery and Asberg 1979). Internal consistency of both the AISRS and MADRS in this sample was good (α = .84–.85).…”

“…In patients with CAD, moderate to strong correlations between MADRS scores and self-rating depression score (BDI-II and HAD) have already been found (Bunevicius et al, 2012a(Bunevicius et al, , 2012b.…”
