Evaluation of bioefficacy of three Citrus essential oils against the dengue vector Aedes albopictus (Diptera: Culicidae) in correlation to their components enantiomeric distribution

Abstract: Laboratory experiments were conducted to study the bioefficacy against Ae. albopictus of three Citrus essential oils, derived from peels of Citrus sinensis, Citrus limon, and Citrus paradise and of their components. Chiral gas chromatography analysis revealed the dominant occurrence of R-(+)-limonene and (-)-β-pinene in all three essential oils while in the case of lemon oil γ-terpinene, neral, and geranial detected also among other components. The tested Citrus essential oils were toxic against mosquito larva… Show more

“…Limonene and linalool have been demonstrated to possess repellent activity against insects, and fleas and ticks in dogs and cats (Environmental Protection Agency, 1994;Hebeish et al, 2008;Müller et al, 2009;Giatropoulos et al, 2012). Carvone has been reported to act as a repellent against A. americanum nymphs (Weldon et al, 2011).…”

“…Alternatives to temephos are methoprene, a synthetic compound that interferes with insect metamorphosis, and bti, a mosquito-specific, gut-toxic protein suspension derived from the bacterium Bacillus thuringiensis serotype H-14. Numerous larvicidal plant extracts have been identified in the laboratory (Giatropoulos et al, 2012;Kovendan et al, 2012Kovendan et al, , 2013Mahesh Kumar et al, 2013).…”

“…Their major component is the D-limonene, whose content vary from one species to another (BIZZO; HOVELL; REZENDE, 2009). Some researchers tested these oils as potential insecticides to control Spodoptera litura (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), Myzuspersicae (Hemiptera: Aphididae) (ISMAN, 2000), Aedes albopictus (Diptera: Culicidae) and Musca domestica (Diptera: Muscidae) (GIATROPOULOS et al, 2012;KUMAR et al, 2012).…”
