Evaluation of behavioral change after adenotonsillectomy for obstructive sleep apnea in children with autism spectrum disorder

Abstract: Behavioral problems were significantly improved following AT in ASD children with OSA. Early detection and treatment of children with OSA is essential to prevent behavioral problems and to support mental development.

“…In one study, adenotonsillectomyin a 5-year-old of ASD child who had OSA was found to enhance the child's social communication, sleep, and attention, and additionally reduced repetitive stereotyped behavior and hypersensitivity [99]. In another study, adenotonsillectomy treatment in ASD children with OSA improved sleep quality which A c c e p t e d M a n u s c r i p t further reduced the severity of behavioral problems [44]. Adenotonsillectomy in ASD children can stimulate anxiety-related problems, but these can be dealt with by following proper guidelines and procedures before the treatment [100].…”

“…ASD children with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) exhibited symptoms such as snoring with loud sounds, sleeping with an open mouth, apnea and leaning of the head backward during sleep [44]. The presence of sleep-disordered breathing has been shown to coincide with stereotyped activity, social impairment and overall severity in autism [45].…”

“…A recent article proposed a novel view on attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, whereby a part of the symptoms of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder were linked to chronic sleep disorders, with delayed circadian rhythm suggested as the underlying mechanism [14]. Furthermore, several studies on children with neurodevelopmental disorders have indicated that improvements in their sleep problems could lead to improvements in their behavioral problems [15][16][17].…”

“…A recent article proposed a novel view on attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, whereby a part of the symptoms of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder were linked to chronic sleep disorders, with delayed circadian rhythm suggested as the underlying mechanism [ 14 ]. Furthermore, several studies on children with neurodevelopmental disorders have indicated that improvements in their sleep problems could lead to improvements in their behavioral problems [ 15 - 17 ]. However, in the context of the evidence regarding the association between sleep problems and developmental trajectories, there is a lack of clarity on whether sleep problems and the predictors of developmental disorders originally coexist or whether sleep problems in early childhood impact developmental trajectories [ 18 ].…”

“…As in the general pediatric population, 8 adenotonsillectomy may improve daytime behaviors in children with ASD and OSA. 9 Therefore, being able to predict which children with ASD are at risk for OSA is not only important for improving the health of children with ASD but also their daytime functioning and development in social communication.…”
