“…This ®nding parallels reports on newborns of cocaine-abusing mothers who also had no increased incidence of hearing de®cits, despite ABR abnormalities [7,32,34]. However, because of changing habits and substances available on black markets, the emerging wave of designer drugs may pose new intra-uterine risks to babys of drug-prone mothers.…”

Exaggerated anticipatory anxiety is common in social anxiety disorder (SAD). Neuroimaging studies have revealed altered neural activity in response to social stimuli in SAD, but fewer studies have examined neural activity during anticipation of feared social stimuli in SAD. The current study examined the time course and magnitude of activity in threat processing brain regions during speech anticipation in socially anxious individuals and healthy controls (HC). Method Participants (SAD n = 58; HC n = 16) underwent functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) during which they completed a 90s control anticipation task and 90s speech anticipation task.

“…[11][12][13][14][15] Other factors may also be influential, such as the timing of cocaine exposure during pregnancy, the amount of exposure to cocaine, the effect of other drugs such as opiate or alcohol or other neurotoxicants, and the susceptibility of the sensorineural organs of hearing at various stages of gestation, which, singly or additively, can lead to different cocaine effects on the auditory system.…”

“…Meconium drug analysis, by enzyme immunoassay, as previously described, 15,16 was done on 58 term infants with risk factors for antenatal illicit drug exposure viz, maternal history of illicit drug (55.2%), limited or no prenatal care (36.2%), maternal alcohol use (6.9%), and teenage pregnancy (1.7%). Infants who tested positive for cocaine served as the cocaine-exposed group; infants with negative results served as the control.…”

“…Studies analyzing the consequences of cocaine or opioid consumption during pregnancy showed no significant increase in SNHL in children from cocaine or opioid‐abusing mothers (Carzoli, Murphy, Hammer‐Knisely, & Houy, 1991; Grimmer, Buhrer, Aust, & Obladen, 1999).…”
