Evaluation of Anti-HSV-2 Activity of Gallic Acid and Pentyl Gallate

Abstract: Herpes simplex virus (HSV) is a DNA-containing enveloped virus that causes common viral infections in humans worldwide leading to a variety of diseases. HSV-1 and HSV-2 can be distinguished on the basis of clinical manifestations (the former is more frequently associated with oral cold sores, while the later causes genital ulcers) and biochemical and serological examinations. In most cases, HSV infection is usually benign or asymptomatic in immunocompetent individuals; however, in patients with an immature or … Show more

“…The cell growth inhibition effects by drugs were determined by measuring the 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT; Sigma-aldrich chemical company) dye absorbance by living cells, as previously described (21). in brief, 3x10 4 cells/well were seeded in 96-well microtiter plates for the MTT assays. after exposure to 400 µM Ga and/or a given MaPK inhibitor for 24 h, 20 µl of MTT solution (2 mg/ml in PBS) was added to each well of 96-well plates (nunc, roskilde, denmark).…”

“…Its biological activities include antioxidant, antibacterial, antiviral, anti-inflammatory, anticancer, antimelanogenic, antiallergic, and anti-obesity (Kim et al 2006;Veluri et al 2006;Hsu and Yen 2007;Kim 2007;Kang et al 2008;Kratz et al 2008;Kaur et al 2009;Locatelli et al 2013;Badhani et al 2015). In this work, gallic acid was utilized as both a reducing and stabilizing agent for synthesizing both GA-AuNPs and GAAgNPs.…”

“…Gallotannin (GT), a plant polyphenol, is widely distributed in various plants, including fruits and foods (Niemetz and Gross 2005), and has shown biological activities including antiinflammatory (Kratz et al 2008), antioxidant (Grundhofer et al 2001), antibacterial (Manna et al 1999), and antiherpetic (Fiuza et al 2004). GT has been reported anticancer activity in various cancer cells, such as prostate, gastric, colon, breast, and cervical cancer (You et al 2010).…”
