Evaluation of a single-shot gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) immunocontraceptive vaccine in captive badgers

Abstract: GonaCon, a single-shot injectable immunocontraceptive vaccine targeting the gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH), has been tested in key mammal species in the UK and shown to be a safe method to reduce population size in areas of high human wildlife conflict. Badgers exhibit an unusual reproductive physiology in that females may maintain fertilised eggs and dormant blastocysts at any time of year and delay their implantation until the winter. It is thus necessary to evaluate the consequences of delayed implan… Show more

“…Improvest® has been used effectively worldwide for decades now [54]. The similarity is also seen in reduced testicular weight, reduced seminiferous tubule diameter, reduced reproduction, and having little to no effect on body weight compared to the controls seen in our data and the Improvest® literature [55,56,57,58,59]. It is important to remember that the Improvest® label claim states that it suppresses testicular function with no indication for inducing infertility in swine, and it has no indications for mice [11].…”

“…The current analysis and other work strongly suggest that reducing infection from the badger population reduces TB incidence rate in local cattle. Similar effects may be achieved or maintained by other measures, such as badger vaccination [36,37] ,…”

“…Additionally we assumed a strategy was possible in which all animals trapped annually for vaccination were also given a fertility control agent which stopped them from breeding for life [e.g. 17 ].…”
