Abstract: Highlights Biosurfactants are more eco-friendly than synthetic surfactants. High costs with substrates represents a problem in biosurfactants production. Alkaline pretreatment was applied to extract hemicellulosic fractions from corncob. Hemicellulosic corncob liquor was utilized to produce surfactin. Surfactin showed high bioremediation potential.

“…Furthermore, it was also inferior to the CMC of chemical-based surfactants, such as sodium lauryl ether sulfate (2.0-2.9 mg/ml) (Bognolo, 1999), showing this biomolecule as a promising candidate to replace synthetic surfactants in industrial applications (de França, et al, 2021). A low CMC also emphasizes the economic advantage of this BS produced by S. racemosum in low-cost medium, since a small amount of it is required to obtain a high efficiency in a process (de França, et al, 2015;Prado, et al, 2019). “…CMC is an important characteristic of any surfactant, which allows making inferences about its efficiency and applicability in various industrial fields (Prado, et al, 2019). It consists of the minimum concentration of surfactant at which clusters of surfactant molecules (micelles) begin to appear in a bulk phase (de França, et al, 2021).…”

“…The advantage of growing bacteria to produce these natural compounds is that controlled cultivation can increase the yields of biosurfactant production. However, studies are needed to optimize production and to find new culture media (such as raw materials) in order to reduce costs and implement relatively simple processes [ 75 ].…”

“…The biosurfactant was recovered by centrifuging (9000 rpm, 20 min) the culture broth in order to remove suspended solids (cells and solid particles from Trub). Subsequently, the pH of the supernatant was adjusted to 2.0 by adding HCl (4.0 M) and left overnight under refrigeration ( 4 C) for precipitate formation [16] , [17] , [18] . The precipitated biosurfactant was centrifuged, washed twice with acidified water (pH 2.0) and resuspended in Milli-Q water (Millipore, USA).…”
