“…The results are consistent with prior literature on the benefits of stepped enhancements to pulse oximetry sounds (Collett et al, 2020; Deschamps et al, 2016; Hinckfuss et al, 2022; Hinckfuss et al, 2016; Zestic et al, 2019). In previous studies, tremolo was mapped to SpO 2 non-target ranges, but HR beats per minute were kept constant in the target range, so no HR enhancement was used.…”

“…This study tested whether enhanced pulse oximeter sonifications would improve participants’ accuracy in identifying the HR and SpO 2 ranges of newborns in the first 10 minutes of life, compared to conventional sonifications. It is part of a program of research investigating ways to enhance the pulse oximetry tone to make clinically relevant ranges for neonatal SpO 2 and/or HR ranges more perceptually distinct (Deschamps et al, 2016; Hinckfuss et al, 2022; Hinckfuss et al, 2016; Zestic et al, 2019). Tremolo and formant enhancements were added to the conventional pulse oximeter sonification in a stepped mapping to mark out the low, target, or high ranges of HR and SpO 2 , respectively, where the actual SpO 2 values considered low, target, or high change with the number of minutes after birth.…”
