“…Among them, one finds an increase in salinity, a dilution of nutrient salts and, consequently, a decrease in chlorophyll-a concentrations and primary productivity. Studies conducted in the past have reported that changes in the coastal dynamics in the Suape port area affected nutrient and algal biomass contents [15], as well as the species composition of phytoplankton [35] and zooplankton populations [36]. Water transparency in estuarine ecosystems may vary depending on rainfall intensity and duration.…”

“…In recent years, the estuary has faced a continuous degradation process due to the construction and expansion of an industrial and port complex. Several studies have focused on evaluating the quality of the water ( [14] [15] [16] [17]) and investigating the local biodiversity ([18] [19] [20] [21]).…”

“…In Kuttanad agrarian zone the annual consumption of fertilizer was 8409 tonnes of N, 5044 tonnes of P and 6786 tonnes of K and the pesticides/fungicides/weedicides were about 500 tonnes/annum [61]. Dissolved inorganic phosphorus was the nutrient most associated with eutrophication in aquatic system [83]. The low N:P ratio from the study specifies the surplus loading of phosphorus into the estuary.…”

“…Some comparison between the TRIX and the ASSETS indicated that TRIX can be used as an indicator of trophic state whereas ASSETS showed good potential to assess eutrophication in coastal areas (Lai et al, 2014). However, some similarities between both, the index and the model, were evident in an estuarine area located on the southern coast in Pernambuco, Brazil (Alves et al, 2013). TRIX was also more efficient to indicate the trophic state of Guanabara Bay, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil (Santos, 2015), in comparison with the TSI developed by O'Boyle et al (2013), since this bay has a high seawater exchange.…”
