Ethanol Production from Waste of Paper Industry

Abstract

The need to increase the share of renewable energy sources in the composition of the world energy matrix has stimulated several researchers in the search for new economically viable and environmentally sustainable technologies. The bioethanol produced from lignocellulosic biomass, emerges as a promising technology, due to their character, renewable, abundant and low cost of processing. The production of lignocellulosic bioethanol involves processes ranging from saccharification of cellulose and hemicellulose present in the biomass and conversion to ethanol by the action of fermentative microorganisms. The aim of this work was to study the processes of enzymatic saccharification and fermentation of waste paper to obtain bioethanol. Simultaneous Saccharification and Fermentation (SSF) ethanol production was performed for 16 hours with Cellic CTec2 β-glucosidase enzyme cocktail, with a concentration of 70 FPU/g, and at pH 4.8. The commercial yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae (Fleischmann) was used. The results showed the conversion of the cellulose industry waste into reducing sugars at 39.44 ± 2,41g g-1 , corresponding to 65 ± 4,12% of the available cellulose yield, achieving a yield of 9.16 ± 0,98g L-1 ethanol and 77% fermentative efficiency. A necessidade de aumentar a participação de fontes de energia renovável na composição da matriz energética mundial tem estimulado diversos pesquisadores na busca por novas tecnologias economicamente viáveis e ambientalmente sustentáveis. O bioetanol, produzido a partir da biomassa lignocelulósica, desponta como tecnologia promissora, devido ao seu caráter renovável e abundante. A obtenção de bioetanol lignocelulósico envolve processos de sacarificação da celulose e da hemicelulose presentes na biomassa, até a sua conversão em etanol por ação de microrganismos fermentativos. O objetivo deste trabalho foi estudar os processos de sacarificação enzimática e fermentação em resíduos de papel para obtenção de bioetanol. A produção de etanol pelo procedimento de sacarificação e fermentação simultâneas (SSF-Simultaneous saccharification and fermentation) foi realizado por 16 horas, utilizando coquetel enzimático β-glucosidase Cellic CTec2, com concentração de 70 FPU/g, e em pH 4,8. Foi utilizada a levedura comercial Saccharomyces cerevisiae (Fleischmann). Os resultados apresentaram a conversão dos resíduos da indústria de celulose em açúcares redutores em 39,44 ± 2,41g g-1 , correspondente a 65 ± 4,12% do rendimento de celulose disponível, alcançando um rendimento de 9,16 ± 0,98 g L-1 de etanol e eficiência fermentativa de 77%.
