Show more

“…A total of 617 individuals participated in the study, 75 of whom were seropositive for T. cruzi with a prevalence of 12.1%, a mean [standard deviation] age of 55.0 [11] years, and a female predominance of 65.3% (n = 49). The main characteristics of the seropositive and seronegative populations are presented in Table 1.…”

“…Digestive disorders occur in 15-20% of patients with ChD in endemic areas 11 , especially disorders of the esophagus and colon. This is mainly a result of the involvement of the enteric nervous system, particularly the Auerbach myenteric plexus with motor incoordination, sphincter achalasia, muscle hypertrophy, and dilatation.…”

“…The vast majority of data published on Chagas disease has been obtained from countries where the disease is endemic, using radiologic studies in patients with severe digestive symptoms. 12,13 The clinical characteristics of the patient population in the present study are different. Our patients, like most immigrants from endemic areas in Europe, are young and, in general, healthy subjects, with the Chagasic infection in the quiescence phase.…”

“…To our knowledge, this is the first study published in a population of immigrants studied in a non‐endemic area using HREM. The vast majority of data published on Chagas disease has been obtained from countries where the disease is endemic, using radiologic studies in patients with severe digestive symptoms 12 , 13 . The clinical characteristics of the patient population in the present study are different.…”

“…8 Megaesophagus and megacolon are the most notable and extensively organs studied in digestive CD; they are observed in about 15% of chronic patients in disease-endemic areas and this is a common condition in western part of Minas Gerais and Goiás State in Brazil. 9,10 Idiopathic megaesophagus and megacolon are rare conditions in our country. For with other protozoa.…”
