The development of new Capsicum cultivars aiming to meet market requirements will depend, above all, on the genetic diversity of the study population. To quantify this genetic divergence, several multivariate techniques assessing quantitative traits have been employed. This study aimed to: i. estimate the genetic diversity among Capsicum chinense accessions from the Active Germplasm Bank of Plants of the Federal University of Viçosa (BGH-UFV); ii. indicate promising accessions for prospective studies of specific market niches; iii. evaluate the disposal of redundant traits. The experiment was conducted in a completely randomized design with four replicates, in which 11 C. chinense accessions were evaluated, based on 11 quantitative fruit traits. The data were subjected to cluster analysis by the UPGMA and Tocher methods, based on the quadratic Euclidean distance, to assess diversity. Afterwards, we used principal component analysis, Jolliffe's method and procrustes analysis for the disposal of traits. The highest genetic dissimilarity was obtained between accessions 2 and 10. The phenotypic correlation coefficients obtained were 0.75 (UPGMA) and 0.91 (Tocher), the latter being significant by the Mantel test (p < 0.05). Six clusters were formed by using the Tocher method, four of which were composed by a single accession. Regarding the disposal of variables, traits TFDW, TFFW, PUN, %DM, FW, PT, and FL were shown to be disposable, and do not affect diversity prediction in terms of graphic dispersion. Accessions 9, 10, and 11 are indicated for in natura consumption, while accessions 2 and 3 are indicated for industrial purposes. These accessions showed the best results among the evaluated traits for the mentioned niches.

This study aimed to develop a methodology based on multivariate statistical analysis of principal components and cluster analysis, in order to identify the most representative variables in studies of minimum streamflow regionalization, and to optimize the identification of the hydrologically homogeneous regions for the Doce river basin. Ten variables were used, referring to the river basin climatic and morphometric characteristics. These variables were individualized for each of the 61 gauging stations. Three dependent variables that are indicative of minimum streamflow (Q 7,10 , Q 90 and Q 95 ). And seven independent variables that concern to climatic and morphometric characteristics of the basin (total annual rainfall -P a ; total semiannual rainfall of the dry and of the rainy season -P ss and P sc ; watershed drainage area -A d ; length of the main river -L p ; total length of the rivers -L t ; and average watershed slope -S L ). The results of the principal component analysis pointed out that the variable S L was the least representative for the study, and so it was discarded. The most representative independent variables were A d and P sc . The best divisions of hydrologically homogeneous regions for the three studied flow characteristics were obtained using the Mahalanobis similarity matrix and the complete linkage clustering method. The cluster analysis enabled the identification of four hydrologically homogeneous regions in the Doce river basin. KEYWORDS: principal component analysis, cluster analysis, homogeneous regions. ESTATÍSTICAS MULTIVARIADAS COMO SUPORTE À REGIONALIZAÇÃO DE VAZÕES MÍNIMAS1 RESUMO: Este trabalho teve por objetivo propor uma metodologia baseada em análises estatísticas multivariadas de componentes principais e de agrupamento, com o intuito de identificar as variáveis mais representativas em estudos de regionalização de vazões mínimas e otimizar a obtenção das regiões hidrologicamente homogêneas para a bacia hidrográfica do Rio Doce. Foram utilizadas 10 variáveis referentes às características climáticas e morfométricas da bacia. Essas variáveis foram individualizadas para as 61 estações fluviométricas adotadas, sendo três variáveis dependentes e indicativas das vazões mínimas (Q 7,10 , Q 90 e Q 95 ) e sete independentes (precipitação total anual -P a ; precipitação total do semestre seco -P ss e chuvoso -P sc ; área de drenagem da bacia -A d ; comprimento do rio principal -L p ; comprimento total dos cursos d'água da bacia -L t ; e declividade média da bacia -S L ). Principal components for the in vivo and carcass conformations of Anglo-Nubian crossbred goats

This study aimed to identify the principal components (PC) that explain the highest percentages of total variance and best characterize the in vivo and carcass morphologies of Anglo-Nubian crossbred goats. Nineteen carcass morphometric traits and six in vivo morphometric traits were measured in 28 kids at eight months of age. Principal component analysis indicated that five PC were able to explain 83.57% of the total variance in the 19 original carcass traits. Those components were termed PC1-Carcass Size, PC2 - Body Condition, PC3-Carcass Width, PC4-Chest Depth, and PC5 - Hindquarter. For in vivo morphometric traits, the first two principal components explained 78.86% of the total variance. These components were called PC1-In vivo Size and PC2-In vivo Conformation.
