“…Despite the wide distribution throughout Central and South American Atlantic coast, the highest white croaker landings occur between the Brazilian southeastern (Costa et al, 2014;Mulato et al, 2015) and the north of Argentina coast (Volpedo, Cirelli, 2006). Similarly to most exploited fishery resources, M. furnieri is under over-exploitation, as results of poor policies and management of fisheries resources in Brazil, Uruguay and Argentina (MMA-REVIZEE, 2006;Castello, 2007).…”

“…We used a long-term dataset to extract information on the occurrence of whitemouth croaker in the PLE to analyze the abundance of each life stage during the study period. Ichthyoplankton samples were taken with a conical plankton net (500 lm, 60 cm mouth diameter) equipped with a flow-meter, which was towed for 3 min in surface water (Costa et al, 2014). Juveniles and adults were classified based on length (\30 mm, 30-90 mm, 90-160 mm and [160 mm), and samples were taken using different methods throughout the study period:…”

“…In Southern Brazil, Patos Lagoon is recognized as an important habitat for this species because the species occurs in this estuary throughout its entire life cycle. Whitemouth croaker is an estuarine-dependent species (Vieira & Castello, 1997;Albuquerque et al, 2012), and depending on its stage of development, it can be found in habitats from the upper limnetic part of the Patos Lagoon to the adjacent marine surf zone and shelf (Costa et al, 2014). The sizes at sexual maturity for males and females are approximately 18 and 20 cm, respectively, at PLE (Castello, 1986).…”

“…Eggs and larvae are retained in the maximum turbidity zone of the salinity front and benefit from food accumulation, shelter against predators and closeness to the main nursery ground (Braverman et al, 2009). In southern Brazil, spawning occur also from spring to summer (Haimovici & Ignacio, 2005) in coastal waters and pelagic eggs and larvae are carried passively into the Patos Lagoon Estuary (PLE) where they recruit to the bottom with 20-30 mm total length (Weiss, 1981) and feed actively on infauna and epifauna as juveniles (Gonçalves et al, 1999;Costa et al, 2013). Other spawning and nursery grounds occur all along the region, as Bahia Blanca Estuary in Argentina (Lopez Cazorla, 1987), Rocha Lagoon in Uruguay (Vizziano et al, 2002), Santos Bay (Giannini & Paiva-Filho, 1990), Sepetiba Bay (Costa & Araujo, 2003) and Guanabara Bay in Brazil (Mulato et al, 2015).…”
