Abstract In the Astrakhan Region (Russia) on the bank of the Kizan River, which is a tributary of the Volga River, there are two oil sludge collectors, called “Sokolov pits”. They were created in the early twentieth century and now they are a major threat to the ecosystem of the delta river Volga.
