Estimation of plate material properties by means of a complex wavenumber fit using Hankel's functions and the image source method

Abstract: This paper presents a new wave fitting approach to estimate the frequency dependent material properties of thin isotropic plate structures from an experimentally obtained vibrational field, exciting the plate at a single point. The method projects the measurement data on to an analytical image source model, in which Hankel's functions are used for a description of the wave fields emanating from the point of excitation, including the reflected wave fields from the edges of the finite plate. By minimizing the er… Show more

“…The fourth procedure to estimate the equivalent material properties of the multilayer plate is a wave correlation technique comprising an image source model that uses Hankel's functions, as described in [12]. The model describes the dynamics of an equivalent plate of finite dimensions with homogeneous material properties.…”

“…In the present paper, a Bayesian regularization is used (see [12] for details). The source strengths (in amplitude and phase) of the image sources are thus estimated by projecting the measured complex response of the plate onto the image source model.…”

“…The parameters of these functions usually contains key data for the identification of the structure. For example, Hankel functions are used with the Image Source Method (ISM) to characterize isotropic plates in the steady harmonic regime [26,27]. As the Green functions of anisotropic plates are not analytic anymore, plane waves are used to approximate the field measured on composite plates.…”

“…The experimental characterization of sandwich structures, as well as the evaluation of suitable test methods and the investigation of sandwich-specific effects, are an interesting research topic. Roozen et al [12] experimentally measured the vibrational field of a sandwich panel used in vehicle industry and projected the data to an analytical image source model to obtain the Young's modulus of an "equivalent" Kirchhoff plate. Shahdin et al [13] studied the behavior of a sandwich material with carbon-fiber-network core.…”
