Estimation of parameters affected in internal exhaust residual gases recirculation and the influence of exhaust residual gas on performance and emission of a spark ignition engine

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of valve mechanisms on the exhaust residual gas (ERG) and effective release energy (ERE) of a motorcycle engine. Here, a simulation model and the estimation a new valve mechanism design is presented. An AVL-Boost simulation model and an experiment system were established. The classical spline approximation method was used to design a new cam profile for various valve lifts. The simulation model was used to estimate the effect of the new valve mechanism designs on engine performance. A new camshaft was produced based on the research data. The results show that the engine obtained a maximum engine brake torque of 21.53 Nm at 7000 rpm, which is an increase of 3.2% compared to the engine using the original valve mechanism. In addition, the residual gas was improved, the maximum engine effective release energy was 0.83 kJ, the maximum engine power was 18.1 kW, representing an improvement of 7.2%, and the air mass flow was improved by 4.97%.

Efficiency and emission reduction are the primary targets of internal combustion engine research due the large number of vehicles in operation and the impact of emissions-related pollution on human and ecosystem health. Harmful components of engine exhaust gases include nitrous oxides (NOx), carbon dioxide, hydrocarbons, and particulate matter. NOx emissions in particular are associated with significant health threats. The recirculation of exhaust gases can reduce NOx emissions and improve engine efficiency when combined with other advanced techniques. On the other hand, the residual exhaust gas also effects on the quality of lubricating engine oil and therefore causes an increase in engine piston ring wear. In this review paper, the effects of external and internal exhaust gas recirculation on the performance and emission characteristics of diesel, gasoline, and alternative fuel engines are summarized and discussed in detail. Because it is difficult to estimate the internal residual exhaust gas in the combustion engine by doing experiments. This review paper introduces control strategies and prediction methods for internal and external exhaust gas recirculation.

The use of biofuel has been researched and announced by scientists to bring benefits in terms of environmental protection. However, studies continue to be conducted to achieve stable results and confirm biofuels as an effective alternative fuel for internal combustion engines. In this study, the fuel used is biodiesel derived from fish oil and conventional diesel fuel. Specifically, the test fuel is conventional diesel mixed with fish oil biodiesel in different ratios, including B0, B10, B20, B30, B40, and B50 (respectively 0%, 10%, 20%, 30% 40%, and 50% biodiesel in the mixture). Research was carried out by both simulation (from B0 to B50) and experiment (from B0 to B30) on a single cylinder common rail diesel engine. Test modes were at 25%, 50%, and 75% load respectively at maximum torque (at 1400 revolutions per minute (rpm)) and minimum fuel consumption (at 2200 rpm). Compared with B0, the average reduction in brake power of the biodiesel decreased relative to the proportion of biodiesel in the fuel mixture. Specific fuel consumption of the brakes (BSFC) and NOx emissions increased with decreasing emissions of smoke, hydrocarbon (HC), and carbon monoxide (CO) emissions when the biodiesel ratio increased.
