Asian pears have become increasingly popular in the European market, but their cultivation history in Europe is rather short. Pear is a demanding species in terms of pollen -donor cultivar. The self-fertility phenomenon in Asian pear cultivars is not currently known. The study was conducted in a 6-year pear orchard (of 23 Asian and 5 European cultivars) at the Mendel University in Lednice (Czech Republic). The following traits were assessed: number of pollen grains, pollen viability, pollen grain germination, self-fertility and the pollen germination index (PGI). European cultivar -'Clapp's Favourite' and Asian cultivars -'Zao Su Li', and 'Shinko' were characterized by the highest number of pollen grains (over 50,000 grains). Asian cultivar 'Dangshansu Li' had the lowest number of pollen grains (less than 10,000 grains). The pollen viability of Asian pears ranged between 90 and 100%. Among European pears, 'Williams Bon Chrétien' and 'Clapp's Favourite' exhibited the highest pollen viability (90%), while the lowest viability was observed for the pollen of cultivars 'Beurré Bosc' and 'Alexander Lucas' pear (60-70%). Additionally, it was found that the germination capacity of the latter two cultivars was very weak (40-70%). After open-pollination all investigated cultivars exhibited greater pollen germination index (PGI) comparing to selfpollination. After the cross-pollination the percentage of pollen tubes below the 20% value at half the length of the pistil suggested a strong incompatibility between the crossed cultivars. The results clearly showed that none of the Asian cultivars are self-fertile, and they require a pollen -donor to produce fruits.

The aim of this study was to characterize five different hybrid cultivars pears (‘Tenra’, ‘Centenária’, ‘Cascatence’, ‘Primorosa’ and ‘Seleta’) deployed in subtropical regions of Brazil regarding its physicochemical characteristics, bioactive compounds and antioxidant activity, as well as to evaluate the influence of these cultivars on the characteristics physicochemical, rheological properties and sensory acceptance of the obtained jelly, for identifying varieties with higher potential for industrial use. Regardingthe bioactive compounds and antioxidant activity it was observed that ‘Seleta’ cultivar was characterized by a higher phenolic content (57.68mg GAEs 100g-1), higher antioxidant activity (13.56% of DPPH sequestration and 1.25µM of trolox g -1) and higher content of vitamin C (3.59mg 100g-1). As the acidity, it ranged from 4.09 to 5.81 g of malic acid 100g-1 (‘Tenra’ and ‘Seleta’, respectively). Regarding color, the color parameter L* varied from 32.14 to 36.83, a* ranged from 2.87 to 5.20, b* ranged from 16.57 to 20.42, Chroma ranged from 16.67 to 21.02 and °Hue ranged from 74.94 to 80.18. Regarding the texture, the jellies produced from ‘Centenária’ and ‘Tenra’ were characterized by having the highest values of hardness (1.21 and 1.23N, respectively), gumminess (0.42 and 0.45, respectively) and chewiness (0.40 and 0.45N, respectively). The jelly obtained from the ‘Centenária’ still showed the highest adhesiveness (2.27N s-1) and springiness (0.99). Already jellies prepared by ‘Cascatence’ showed the highest cohesiveness values (0.68). The jellies prepared with different pear cultivars showed good sensory acceptance for all measured properties, with average scores ranging between the hedonic terms “liked slightly” to “liked very much”. Cultivars of subtropical pear trees present different physicochemical characteristics, resulting in jellies with different physicochemical characteristics and rheological properties. Processing in the form of jelly is extremely viable due to the good acceptance by consumers of all formulations elaborated.

RESUMO -O objetivo do trabalho foi elaborar um meio de cultura para avaliação da viabilidade polínica e determinar o número de grãos de pólen por antera e por flor de espécies de fisális. O trabalho foi desenvolvido de forma sequencial, onde grãos de pólen de Physalis (P. angulata, P. ixocarpa, P. minima, P. peruviana e P. pubescens) foram submetidos à germinação em meio de cultura desenvolvido em quatro fases: verificação da concentração de ágar e pH, concentração de sacarose, nitrato de cálcio e ácido bórico. Para a contagem de grãos de pólen, cinco anteras foram coletadas entre cinco espécimes representativos de cada espécie, deixadas em repouso para ocorrência da deiscência e posteriormente adicionado ácido lático, para melhoria da visualização do grão de pólen. Após 48 horas o número de grãos de pólen foi quantificado com auxílio de câmara de Neubauer e o número de grãos de pólen por antera determinado por fórmula pré-estabelecida. Observou-se que todas as espécies possuem comportamento semelhante quanto às suas exigências para germinação do grão de pólen, sendo o pH do meio em torno de 5,4 e a concentração de ágar de 8 g L -1; todas as espécies mostram dependência de cálcio e boro para uma melhor viabilidade polínica, destacando-se P. minima em que a adição de boro não propiciou elevação acentuada na porcentagem de germinação. Quanto ao número de grãos de pólen as espécies podem ser divididas em dois grupos, com P. angulata, P. peruviana e P. pubescens com maior número de grãos de pólen por antera e por flor em relação a P. ixocarpa e P. minima.Palavras-chave: Physalis sp.. Viabilidade de pólen.ABSTRACT -The aim of this study was to develop a culture medium for the evaluation of pollen viability and to determine the number of pollen grains per anther and per flower in species of Physalis. The study was developed sequentially, where pollen grains of Physalis (P. angulata, P. ixocarpa, P. minima, P. peruviana and P. pubescens) underwent germination in a culture medium developed over four phases: checking the concentration of agar and the pH, and the concentrations of sucrose, calcium nitrate and boric acid. For the pollen count, five anthers were collected from five representative specimens of each species, allowed to settle for dehiscence to take place, with lactic acid then being added to improve visualisation of the pollen grains. After 48 hours, the number of pollen grains was quantified with the help of a Neubauer chamber, and the number of pollen grains per anther determined by pre-established formula. All species were seen to have similar behaviour in their requirements for pollen grain germination, the pH of the medium being around 5.4 and the agar concentration 8 g L -1. All species display a dependence on calcium and boron for better pollen viability, especially P. minima, where the addition of boron did not provide any sharp increase in the germination percentage.
