Espirito Santo Virus: a New Birnavirus That Replicates in Insect Cells

Abstract: Espirito Santo virus (ESV) is a newly discovered virus recovered as contamination in a sample of a virulent strain of dengue-2 virus (strain 44/2), which was recovered from a patient in the state of Espirito Santo, Brazil, and amplified in insect cells. ESV was found to be dependent upon coinfection with a virulent strain of dengue-2 virus and to replicate in C6/36 insect cells but not in mammalian Vero cells. A sequence of the genome has been produced by de novo assembly and was not found to match to any know… Show more

“…Alignment of various pVP2 CTD sequences supports a ubiquitous mechanism for pentamer assembly in birnaviruses. The IBDV 452 RR 453 scissile bond (or analogous bonds) is conserved or has (46). Some features of the IBDV T ϭ 13 capsid assembly remain to be elucidated.…”

“…CYV is a bisegmented dsRNA virus from the Entomobirnavirus genus within the Birnaviridae family that was recently isolated from Culex pipiens mosquitoes in Germany (27). Isolation of the highly related Espirito Santo virus and Mosquito X virus in Brazil and China, respectively, indicates that these entomobirnaviruses are widely distributed in nature (28,29). …”

“…Six genetic clusters have been identified in the Birnaviridae family [10,11]. Three of them define viruses infecting a unique phylum, the vertebrates: the infectious bursal disease virus (IBDV) infects birds, while the blotched snakehead virus (BSNV), the infectious pancreatic virus (IPNV) and its allies infect fishes.…”

“…Three of them define viruses infecting a unique phylum, the vertebrates: the infectious bursal disease virus (IBDV) infects birds, while the blotched snakehead virus (BSNV), the infectious pancreatic virus (IPNV) and its allies infect fishes. The other clusters infect i) insects such as birnaviruses found in dipters, like the Drosophila X virus (DXV), the Drosophila B virus (DBV) and the Esperito Santo virus (ESV) which has been discovered in mosquito cells co-infected with dengue-2 virus [11] and ii) mollusks such as the Tellina virus 1 (TV-1) described from a bivalve [10]. Birnaviruses from rotifers have not been genetically characterized.…”
