Abstract

The need for high-throughput techniques for the analysis of biomolecules such as proteins and nucleic acids in biological experiments is currently critical to know its structure, function, and interactions. Mass spectrometry can be used to complement traditional techniques in the study of biological systems and provide a more complete understanding of the biological processes under examination. Native mass spectrometry has shown to be a critical tool to analyse proteins, protein complexes, and nucleic acids. These methods are used to study alterations in the structure of these biomolecules, identify the presence of mutations/modifications, and identify binding site motifs to answer questions related to human health and drug development. The use of mass spectrometry coupled to ultraviolet photodissociation for the analysis of proteins and nucleic acids are emphasized in this article.
