The Ministry of Education (MOE) has traditionally placed a strong emphasis on both the teaching and learning of English as a second language by its learners. It is crucial for the Malaysians as a second language users of English to improve their language skills especially speaking skills as it enables language users to be very much involved in verbal communication for the motive of providing and exchanging information as well as establishing long term bonding. Acquiring better speaking knowledge presents a severe challenge for ESL learners who struggle with their speaking, therefore, educators moved beyond traditional teaching approaches to modern ones that involve various tools such as social media which is a new technique for improving their learners' speaking skills. This systematic review focuses on the effectiveness of social media in improving speaking skills of ESL learners. This paper provides a systematic review of relevant published studies on the effectiveness of social media in improving the speaking skill of ESL learners from the year 2017 to 2021. This systematic review tries to answer a research question, i.e., what are the benefits of using social media in enhancing the speaking skills of ESL learners? For this research, fifteen studies were chosen to be reviewed in detail. The findings show that social media is an excellent resource that can be utilized by the educators during teaching and learning of ESL classroom since it improves their speaking skill as well as boosts ESL learners' motivation level and gives suggestions and information on content on how educators can integrate social media into their own teaching methods. As a suggestion for further study in the future, more attention could be paid to investigating the usefulness of social media in teaching and learning of English Language skills including listening, reading and writing.

English language learners have difficulties in English in pronouncing fricative consonants, voiced and voiceless TH, plosive consonants and vowel sounds. Serious speech mistakes can lead to miscommunication since poor pronunciation abilities make it difficult for other people to hear what you are saying. Additionally, students may miss their lecturers' direct explanations of proper pronunciation when taking online English lessons with inconsistent Internet access. Proper pronunciation can help students participate in conversations, form connections, and improve graduates' employability abilities. Furthermore, pronunciation skills are learnt independently at higher education institutions. Before designing a web-based tool for self-directed learning of English pronunciation, the designers must get feedback from the students about their self-directed learning, self-evaluation of English language proficiency and English learning experiences through Online Distance Learning (ODL). This survey is a preliminary survey towards the development of a heutagogical English pronunciation application. An online questionnaire was disseminated to 424 respondents from various higher education institutions in Malaysia. Â In this survey, firstly we aimed to get feedback from the students about their self-directed learning, self-evaluation of English language proficiency and English learning experiences through Online Distance Learning (ODL). The survey consisted of demographic data of respondents, standardized test of English language proficiency, self-evaluation of English language proficiency and English language learning experiences during COVID-19. The findings suggested that although language learners have developed their self-directed learning skills, they still need to improve these skills in learning the language using ODL. Learners consider themselves as having average English language proficiency. They were responsible for improving their pronunciation skills and needed assistant tools to improve their pronunciation skills. It is recommended that an application that uses a heutagogical approach such as Speech-to-Text and Text-to Speech need to be developed.

Moving into the post-pandemic phase, there is currently a rise in the incorporation of digital tools in teaching and learning particularly in regards to ESL. This most likely is due to the fact that overnight, the global crisis had caused both educators and students to rely heavily on technology and digital tools for teaching and learning. This cross-sectional study explores students' perceptions in using YouTube to improve their speaking skill in Malaysia and Indonesia. Quantitative research instrument was utilized in the form of 5-point Likert scale survey questionnaire that was adapted from past research. The questionnaire was distributed to 50 Malaysians and 50 Indonesians at secondary levels to get the answer to three research questions; 1) What are the English language learners' perceptions on YouTube use in English language learning? 2) What are the English language learners' perceptions on the role of YouTube in English speaking skills improvement? And 3) To what extent do the perceptions of Malaysian and Indonesian students vary on the use of YouTube in improving speaking skills? The data was analysed using Statistical Package for the Social Science (SPSS) version 27 as well as descriptive analysis of the mean and standard deviation. Semi-structured interviews were also conducted to obtain in-depth feedback from ten students among the respondents. The findings suggest that although the students' perceptions of using YouTube videos in English language learning are highly positive, they are generally unsure if YouTube is able to improve speaking skills. Apart from that, the findings also indicates that the roles of YouTube in improving speaking skills for both nationalities were almost identical at that stage because p > 0.05 which is 0.712. It can be concluded that there is no difference of perceptions on the use of YouTube to improve speaking skills among Malaysian and Indonesian secondary school students.
