Abstract: Resumo A partir da experiência marítima de africanos na África, analiso as transformações ocorridas em função da legislação portuguesa sobre a mobilidade e o registro dos marinheiros cativos e as leituras disso na historiografia, culminando com uma análise das perspectivas de liberdade de marinheiros escravos em trânsito pelos domínios portugueses entre a segunda metade do XVIII e as primeiras décadas do século XIX.
