Erection loss in association with condom use among young men attending a public STI clinic: potential correlates and implications for risk behaviour

Abstract: Abstract. Background: To assess prevalence of condom-associated erection loss and to identify correlates of erection loss among men attending a sexually transmissible infections (STI) clinic. Methods: Men (n = 278) attending an STI clinic responded to an anonymous questionnaire aided by a CD recording of the questions. The sample was screened to include only men who had used a condom during penile-vaginal sex at least three times in the past 3 months. “…Regarding early removal of condoms, we know that issues related to arousal and pleasure and erectile difficulties can be the impetus for taking off condoms before sex is over. 19,22,54 Condom-associated erection difficulties have been surprisingly under-researched. Yet what evidence we have suggests that they may be of crucial importance in terms of their relationship to slippage, 54,57 and possibly to attitudes towards condoms and future use.…”

Yet what evidence we have suggests that they may be of crucial importance in terms of their relationship to slippage, 54,57 and possibly to attitudes towards condoms and future use. We also have evidence that despite assumptions to the contrary, phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitors do not fully overcome condom-associated erection problems.…”

“…loss of erection, loss of sensation or inability to ejaculate). [55][56][57][58] Two intentional user practices that have received increased attention of late -putting condoms on after starting intercourse or removing condoms before ejaculation 20,55,[59][60][61][62][63] -illustrate well the challenges of achieving effective use. And although the rate of any of single condom problem generally is low (less than 5-10% of coital acts), 55,59 the fraction of users reporting one or more problems often exceeds 40-50% even over brief periods of time.…”

“…loss of pleasure, difficulty reaching orgasm, genital irritation, erection loss and drying of the vagina. To date, with the exception of erection loss, 6,19,20 research documenting the prevalence of these problems and the correlates to condom use has been scant.…”
