“…Of these, six were basal carcinomas and only one was a squamous cell carcinoma (7). LOVE and MONTGOMERY indentified two cases of basal cell carcinomas and two of squamous cell carcinomas in a series of 271 (10). Trabecular (Merckel Cell) carcinoma, arising in the wall of an epidermal cyst, has been described by PERSE et al (5).…”

“…The question of malignancy in these tumors is vexing, and while accepted by some authors is considered unjustifiable by others (Reed & Lamar 1966, Lund 1957, Dabska 1971. The reported incidence of malignancy in sebaceous cysts, including those of the scalp, varies from 1.5% (Love & Montgomery 1943) to 9.2% (Bishop 1931). Documentation in some of these series has been criticized (Reed & Lamar 1966) and indeed in most instanees this seems justified.…”

“…On puncture, a small compact ball of keratinous material is easily expressed. Histologically, a milium is a small epithelial cyst lined by a few layers of stratified squamous epithelium and containing concentric lamellae of keratin (5,6).…”

“…Some investigators believe that these lesions represent benign tumors (6). Others believe that secondary milia are retention cysts showing proliferative tendencies of the epithelium (5,6). Tsuji et al (7) postulated that they represent benign epithelial proliferation in the early stage (growing phase) and later become retention cysts (retention phase).…”
