Epidermoid Cysts of the Callosal Region —Three Case Reports—

Abstract: Three patients with rare epidermoid cyst in the callosal region are described, two adjacent and one in the corpus callosum. Computed tomography revealed atypical features, i.e. a large, well-defined high density mass unenhanced postcontrast and a well-defined hypodense mass with marginal calcification in one case each. Such a diffuse high-density mass may be caused by hemorrhage, highly concentrated protein or calcification of keratinized debris within the cyst. Marginal calcification may occur for unkn… Show more

“…Intracranial epidermoid tumors originate from epithelial inclusions isolated during the third or fourth week of embryonic development. 3,4,7,11,12 Epidermoid tumors in the callosal region arise from epithelial implantation in the longitudinal cerebral fissure during its formation through expansion and approximation of the forebrain vesicles. 4,7 There have only been 18 cases reported in the literature of an epidermoid tumor arising in the interhemispheric fissure.…”

“…5,8,9) Epidermoid cysts tend to arise in paramedian locations such as the cerebellopontine angle, suprasellar, and ventricular regions, and more rarely in the thalamus, middle cranial fossa, brain stem, and callosal region. 2,4,7,12,13) Spontaneous hemorrhage is rare due to the avascular nature, and reported cases of intracranial epidermoid cyst with hemorrhage were preferentially located in the infratentorial compartment. 3,10) We describe a case of supracallosal epidermoid cyst presenting with repetitive hemorrhages.…”
