Epidemiology of Brazilian spotted fever in the Atlantic Forest, state of São Paulo, Brazil

Abstract: SUMMARYThe tick-borne bacteriumRickettsia rickettsiiis the aetiological agent of Brazilian spotted fever (BSF). The present study evaluated tick infestations on wild and domestic animals, and the rickettsial infection in these animals and their ticks in 7 forest areas adjacent to human communities in the São Paulo Metropolitan Area (SPMA). The results were compared to ecological traits of each sampled area. Two main tick species,Amblyomma… Show more

“…Few studies have analyzed the risk factors associated with BSF and the vectors involved in transmission in Brazil and elsewhere. However, the environmental context was shown to affect the presence of hosts and nymphs and adults forms of Amblyomma at the forest edges, and factors such as occupational activities, leisure, and age have also been identifi ed as risk factors for BSF (5) (10) (12) (13) . The study area was the Piracicaba river basin, which crosses the region of Campinas in the State of São Paulo.…”

“…Amblyomma aureolatum is considered the main vector of R. rickettsii in the São Paulo region (19) and has been reported to frequently parasitize dogs in counties (Nazaré Paulista and Mairiporã) close to the study region (20) . Moreover, based on the molecular characterization of R. rickettsii in R. sanguineus in Brazil, the possible risk of an active, or even an indirect, participation of R. sanguineusin the transmission of R. rickettsii to humans cannot be excluded (21) .…”

“…In the state of São Paulo, two species of ticks are implied in the transmission of Rickettsia rickettsii to humans, A. cajennense and A. aureolatum; the latter occurs in places where the Atlantic Forest prevails 7,46 , so it does not occur in the analyzed city, in which the Cerrado bioma. The identification of the vector species helps in understanding the specificities of its biological cycle and its relationship with the hosts.…”
