Epidemiology and Clinical Outcomes of Acute Spine Trauma and Spinal Cord Injury: Experience From a Specialized Spine Trauma Center in Canada in Comparison With a Large National Registry

Abstract: Our results indicate that significant differences in the characteristics of acute spine trauma but not demographics have occurred overtime in our institution. Also, there were significant differences between our database and the NTR regarding age distribution. Our reduced in-hospital mortality rates in comparison with the provincial data reinforce the recommendations for early management of SCI patients in a spine trauma center.

“…In a specialized trauma center in Canada 17 , as well as in evaluations conducted in the eastern zone São Paulo city (Brazil) 18 it has been observed an increased prevalence of SCI in women, to about 30%. These data can be directly related to the fact that the women are carrying more vehicles (motorcycles, cars), as well as being professionally more inserted in civilian buildings, where falls are more frequent.…”

“…12 Another study conducted in Canada showed that injuries due to falls cause lesions mainly at the cervical, low thoracic and lumbar levels. 4 As reported in a previous study in our centre, diving is the most common cause among sports and leisure accidents affecting young persons and resulting in the majority of neurologically incomplete cervical SCI cases 13 according to the American Spinal Injury Association-International Spinal Cord Society international standard for neurological classification. 14 Other causes, such as violence and gunshots, are not common in Europe and in Italy when compared with South America and USA.…”

“…There is a strong male predominance. [1][2][3][4][5][6][7] Several studies have reported that about 40% of the patients affected by TSCI are tetraplegics, and around 40% have a neurologically complete spinal lesion. 2,[5][6][7] The annual incidence of TSCI in Europe has been reported to be about 17.5 patients per million, whereas in North America it is reported to be around 40 per million population.…”
