Epidemiologic Patterns of Infection With the Hepatitis B Virus-Associated Delta Agent in Italy

Abstract: To assess the epidemiology of infection with the delta agent associated with hepatitis B virus, sera from 1314 carriers of the hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) and 687 patients with hepatitis B collected in 1978-1981 from different regions of Italy were tested for delta antigen and antibody to the antigen (anti-delta), and the characteristics of delta-positive patients were analyzed. Anti-delta was found in each center participating in the study, indicating that delta infection has spread throughout Italy. … Show more

“…In the early 70s, HBV accounted for nearly one third of cirrhosis cases [3], a decade later its associated defective hepatitis delta virus (HDV) accounted for most cases of a so-called "juvenile cirrhosis" [4] and HCV has been found responsible of more than half of cirrhosis cases since its discovery in 1989 [5,6].…”

“…Methods A cross-sectional study involving 16 referral centres scattered all over the country in 2014. Results Out of the 513 hepatitis B surface antigen-positive subjects enrolled, 61 (11.9%) were anti-delta positive, with in Italy, particularly in Southern areas, accounting for the majority of cases of juvenile cirrhosis [3]. High prevalence rates of HDV infection were worldwide reported, especially in Mediterranean areas, Eastern Europe, the Amazon basin and central Asia [4].…”

“…Since 1990's, HDV infection has decreased significantly in Europe [35,36]. In sequential surveys in Italy, rate of anti-HDV seropositivity was found equal to 24.6% in 1983 [37], 14% in 1992 [38], and 8.3 in 1997 [39]. A similar decreasing rate in HDV seropositivity was also seen in Spain [40].…”
